  • The Summit County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society was chartered 17 April 1971. Our purpose is: To create and build an interest in preserving and collecting historical and genealogical records in, and for, Summit County and the State of Ohio. To advance the study of genealogy; and to attempt to help and educate the individual in his own research.

    MEETING TIMES & PLACES - Meetings are not just for members. Guests are welcome at any meeting. All you have to do is show up.  Meetings for 2007 are the third Saturday of the month at 1 p.m. at the Akron-Summit  County Public Library, 60 S. High St., in downtown  Akron.  Meetings begin at 1 p.m. There are no meetings in August, November and December.  The annual banquet is in November. Time and place of the banquet are announced in October.

    Meeting Programs for 2008



    All meetings of  the chapter are at 1 p.m. at the Akron-Summit County Public Library, 60 S. High St., in downtown Akron unless otherwise announced.

    Saturday January 19th:   “GENEALOGY SWAP MEET”  1:00 at the Akron Summit County Library, 60 S. High St., Akron
    Join us to swap anything related to genealogy! Bring magazines, books, maps, CD's, Newsletters, or anything else that you are no longer using and swap it with someone else for something that will help you with your family research. Who knows what treasures will be swapped! We'll also have a Q & A session to swap ideas and questions.

    Saturday February 16th:    "CIVIL WAR FAMILIES OF SUMMIT COUNTY, OHIO!"  1:00 at the downtown Akron-Summit County Public Library.
    We are introducing our newest addition to our Lineage Society Family. The objective of the society is to encourage descendants to prove their Summit County ancestor's Civil War service in time for the approaching Civil War sesquicentennial in four years (2011-2015). This proof will be recorded and filed locally for future generations as lasting tribute to the ancestors deeds. After an explanation of the society's application, a workshop will be conducted in Special Collections to explore the Civil War sources available there and elsewhere.

    Saturday, March 15th:  “EXPLORING AND EVALUATING GENEALOGY COMPUTER PROGRAMS” 1:00 at the downtown Akron-Summit County Library.
    Gerald Woodling, Julie Wilson and Kelly Holderbaum will join us to compare several popular genealogy computer programs, Family Tree Maker, Roots Magic, PAF, and Legacy, and the Master Genealogist. After the comparison we will break into small groups to actually view the different aspects of each program on several different laptops. If you have a laptop with one of these programs bring it along to ask questions and learn more about the program.

    Thursday, April 24:   "STATE OF OHIO LAWS AND RULES GOVERNING CEMETERIES"  * Note Change of Time and Location* "7:00 p.m. at the New Horizons Christian Church, 290 Darrow Road, Akron
    Mr. Theodore J. Hornyak, Investigator for the Ohio Department of Commerce, Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing. Mr. Hornyak will discuss how cemeteries in Ohio are regulated, things to be mindful of when visiting a cemetery, and cemetery consumer information. The presentation will be informative to not only for the consumer but also for the cemetery personel, local government agencies responsible for cemeteries and historical societies. Join us at the New Horizons Christian Church, 290 Darrow Road, Akron at 7:00 p.m.

    Saturday May 17th:  "THE VETERANS HONOR ROLL OF SUMMIT COUNTY, OHIO"  * Note Change of Location* "1:00 p.m. at the Acker Moore Memorial Hall, American Legion/VFW, 3733 Fishcreek Rd, Stow
    As we release our Veterans Honor Roll CD, this will be a meeting you will long remember, complete with military color guard, special guests from several military establishments, and an unusual military tribute. We will explain how this project originated , how it was completed with the hard work of our members and friends, and then demonstrate how to use this very special CD. Join us to help celebrate Armed Forces Day at the Acker Moore Memotial Hall, American Legion/VFW, 3733 Fishcreek Road, Stow, at 1:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

    Saturday, June 21th:  "WHO WILL BE THE NEXT GENEALOGIST IN YOUR FAMILY?"   1:00 at the downtown Akron-Summit County Library.
    Bring with you a young member of the family, a child, a grandchild, or even a teenager or 30 something! Now is the time to get the next generation involved in their family history and dispel the myth that genealogy is boring and just for old people! Don't miss this exciting afternoon with fun activities that you can take to a family reunion this summer!

    Saturday July 19th "ALL THINGS CEMETERY
    SATURDAY, JULY 19th CHAPTER MEETING-NOTE CHANGE OF LOCATION 1:00 PM at the Old Tallmadge Cemetery, located on the west side of route 91, south of Tallmadge Circle and north of the railroad tracks..
    This will be our 3rd annual meeting at a local cemetery, this one will be at the Old Tallmadge Cemetery.This year, we will provide opportunities for hands on experience in a variety of areas, including tombstone rubbings, transcription tips, identification of emblems and symbols, a dowsing refresher, and preparing for a cemetery visit. We will have activities for the nimble as well as the sedate so mark your calendar!

    Saturday September 20th:  "GRAPHOANALYSIS-WHAT YOUR HANDWRITING SAYS ABOUT YOU AND YOUR ANCSTORS"   1:00 at the downtown Akron-Summit County Library.
    Rebecca Easton-Wehr,a Certified Graphoanalyst, will explain everything you ever wanted to know about handwriting. She works with her local police department, banks, attorneys, and individual businesses. Bring your ancestors' signature to learn more about them!

    Saturday, October 18th:  "Citations Are Easy"    1:00 at the downtown Akron-Summit County Library.
    Presented by Donna Redhead Gruber, CGSM; Confused about when and how to write citations for your genealogical documents? Learn when to use citations and the basics of how to write citations. Then see how to use the formats found in Evidence! Citation and Analysis for the Family Historian and Evidence Explained, by Elizabeth Shown Mills, to formulate citations for sample documents.

    Saturday November 1, 2008:  "THE SUMMIT COUNTY OGS BANQUET" Cathedral Buffet 2690 State Road, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio 44223  
    Join us at the Cathedral Buffet, 2690 State Road, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio 44223, for an evening of food, fun, and to hear about "Life as a Civil War Soldier: "1861-1865", presented by Mr. Harold George. Mr. George will discuss life at home in Summit County prior to the Civil War, recruiting procedures, soldier's uniforms, equipment and camp life. He will also talk about battles, hardships, treatment of the soldiers and life after the war.
        Mr George has published four historical books and four quick reference guides since 1982. His most recent books are Civil War Monuments of Ohio (2006) and Dead Soldiers at Gettysburg (2007). following the program an autographed copy of each book will be available for purchase.
        Since 1993, he has performed his programs of a historical nature. He currently performs six different programs. For additional information regarding his books or programs, please access his internet website at, www.publicspeakerforhire.org

    The Summit County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society does not have a building for research purposes. We are limited to checking only the books we have published for information about your ancestor. As a courtesy to those of you needing in-depth research we offer you the following list of chapter members who will do genealogical research for a fee. A brief explanation of their work areas is provided..

    Researchers will be contacted by you and will work for you. Therefore, The Summit County Chapter, OGS will NOT be liable for work done by any researcher.

    Fees will vary according to the background and experience of the researcher. For more information concerning individual fees and procedures please write directly to the person(s) of your choice. You may want to write to more than one individual to see who is best suited to your needs. Please include a long self-addressed stamped envelope (S.A.S.E.) for their reply. Thank You!

    FIRST SETTLERS OF SUMMIT COUNTY, OHIO

             The following is a list of members and former members who have been accepted into FIRST SETTLERS OF SUMMIT COUNTY, and their ancestors. The year they became members of First Settlers follows in parenthesis. Double stars ** denotes they are a current chapter member. Under each member's name is the ancestor he/she submitted and the year and township of settlement. Names of the First Settlers are printed in blue.
                Copies of these applications and documentation can be seen at the Akron-Summit County Public Library in the genealogy section of the Language, Literature and History Department.
                You can obtain an application form by sending e-mail to summitogs@yahoo.com and requesting that one be mailed to you.  Include your full name and address.  If you have Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer and a high speed DSL or cable connrection you can also call it up and print it out or download the file which is called Settlers.pdf  Because the file is rather large, those with a dial-up connection will not be able to access the the form.   Get copy of  the form.
